Holy Ascension Monastery / Свято-Вознесенский мужской монастырь

Alexander Andreievitch met the abbot of the Holy Ascension Monastery / Свято-Вознесенский мужской монастырь , the Very Reverand Father Ioann  in June 2014 on his visit to the village of Dubovitchi to commerate the feast day of the miraculous icon of the Theotokos which has been in the village for 400 years until it disappeared during the Russian Civil War in 1918.

Father Ioann and the brother monks of the Holy Ascenion Monastery find themselves in the midst of Ukraine’s undeclared Civil War. Some days are quiet and some days are dangerously active. At night, shots can still be heard and the people who remain are largely cut off from contact with neighboring cities and the larger economy as it is still dangerous to travel the roads. Despite this oppressive environment or perhaps in light of it, the monastery’s role is paramount to preserving a sense of purpose and community.
