COSSACKS — GERBEL, Nikolai. Iziumskii Slobodskoi Kazachii Polk. 1651-1765. [The Izium Free Cossack Regiment. 1651-1765.] St. Petersburg: Eduard Prats, 1852. 8° (217x145mm). (Spotting.) Contemporary Russian half leather (extremities rubbed, sides scuffed, typed bibliographical note pasted on the front endpaper.) Provenance: Arkadii Vasil’evich Kochubei, Egurov Library (title stamp; ?removed bookplate) — Alexander Kniazeff (printed ticket).

FIRST EDITION, from the celebrated collection of Arkadii Vasil’evich Kochubei. Free Cossacks were used by Tsars to settle and protect the region from Tatar raids; their privileges were revoked by Catherine II, when the regiment became the 11th Izium Hussars. Lyons 1156; Zaionchkovskii 2165.
